Now there is no need to create awareness about the hazards of polythene bags. Even uneducated people know that the polythene bags choke the land and blcok the water permeation of water to lower strata. Even in towns the rain water flow and sewage water flow is blocked in underground drains because of the polythene bags. Though Tamilnadu Government had imposed a ban in Jayalalithaa regime, it had then relaxed it. We can not look the issue in loss of employment for the families involved in polythene bag industry. We should consider tha hazards created by it. So, in the interest of large public, we need to weed out polythene bags. Still they have their own lobby to go scot free.

So, we need to look other options to reduce the usage. Some of the rotary, lions and other forums have decided not to encourage the polythene usage. I know the situation in Tiruppur. Even the managers of textile companies go with a vessel and cloth bag to purchase meat. They buy it in their vessel and carry it. Even if they need to pack it, they accept it only in some leaves, banana leave or palm leaves.

Similarly many people don't get carry bags in shops. They carry cloth bags with them to shops and carry the items in that only.

When vegetable vendor comes to your area they also give the fruits & vegetables in carry bags. I find some ladies don't accept the carry bags. They bring some plate and buy vegetables. That way they avoid carry bags.

Also when we give orders to grossary shops, they send items in carry bags. Either we can return carry bags to them or keep the bags safely and not throuw into the dust bins. Instead when some vegetable vendor comes, we can give such carry bags to them. This way, it is saving for him and we avoid throwing polythene bag to bins. If everybody start to recycle or re-use these bags, the number of polythene bags finding their way to garbage will be reduced. When this re-use starts, the production need to come down. When the demand comes down, automatically, manufacturers will look for other options of business.

We can not wait for the government to impose total ban. But we can reduce the usage and force the industry to reconsider their business option.
